It all started with Black Friday, which many of you may know originally was a term that wonky economists used to designate the approximate day when retailers broke even for the year (literally, went into the black in accounting parlance) and started making a profit. What began as the unofficial start of holiday shopping turned into an extravaganza of discount madness. With the online era we saw Cyber Monday – again, originally a term used by people in the industry of online retailing to describe  a pattern they saw in their data, that soon turned into a consumer craze. Last night I heard a commercial for Macy’s that touted Cyber Week.

Even if you love the holidays the emphasis on consumerism can get to be a bit much, right?

Which is why, in 2012, the 92nd Street Y launched a new idea – #GivingTuesday. The idea is that the Tuesday after Thanksgiving would be a day of charitable giving to support the causes and organizations that you believe in. It’s an idea that has spread further and further each year.

If you are inclined to participate in #GivingTuesday I’d like to ask that you consider a gift to Path Forward. We are a 501(c)(3), so your gift is tax-deductible. More importantly, your donation helps to fund our work to empower those who’ve taken time off for caregiving restart their careers. Your support will help us bring mid-career return-to-work programs to more companies and more cities.

No matter where you choose to give to this year, I also highly encourage you to spread the word about #GivingTuesday and specifically call out the organizations you support. You can very much amplify the impact of your donation by shining a social media spotlight on the causes and organizations you care about. I can tell you from personal experience that social sharing efforts are appreciated very much inside the walls of your favorite nonprofit.

If you participate in #GivingTuesday by making a donation to Path Forward, you can use this post on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIN to spread the word (many other organizations have created Tweets you can use, too):

I donated to @PathFWD to empower moms to restart their careers. #GivingTuesday https://www.crowdrise.com/pathforward2016

Wherever you give this Tuesday, know that your donation of any amount means a lot to the people who are working to make a difference in the world.
