What I Am Grateful For This Year

This Thanksgiving will be a quiet one for me. We aren’t traveling and we aren’t entertaining. We will be just the four of us — watching the parade, eating way too much and relaxing. I can’t wait! While I love holidays with my extended family, a few days of we-don’t-have-to-go-out is something I’m really looking forward to. And partly, I’m looking forward to some quiet days to think about all the many things I have to be grateful for.

It’s a long list.

This year I’m very thankful for Path Forward’s employer partners. We work with an amazing slate of companies and their support is vital to our organization. We couldn’t do what we do without their financial support, but more importantly these companies are creating opportunities for the many women (and men) looking to restart their careers after caregiving.

I am also so thankful for the people who have participated in Path Forward returnships. I learn so much from these amazing women! And, while there have only been a handful, I’ve learned a lot from the men I’ve met who’ve had a pause in their careers to care for children, parents or other loved ones.

The Path Forward team — Christine, Barb and Heidi — are some of the most incredible people I’ve had the privilege to work with. Each one offers me a different perspective on the work we do. They also make me laugh, and funny is my favorite trait in any human, so I’m very grateful for that! Our team is extended by the Path Forward Board — a group of men and women who are deeply engaged with the staff as we build this organization and make a difference in the lives of so many families.

I’m so very grateful for my family. My children are kind and funny. My husband, also kind and funny, brings the added bonus of being a fully supportive partner in this endeavor we are on together. He is as likely as I am to cook a meal, book a kid doctor appointment, fill out a form or buy a birthday gift.

Finally, I’m so grateful for the work I get to do. Building Path Forward is an honor and a privilege. It’s also great, great fun! I get to read, write and speak about my favorite topics. I get to visit some of the world’s most amazing companies and work with some of their smartest employees. And I get to create a program that supports and empowers caregivers in their return to their professional selves. In just about every way possible I have the best job in the world.

If you are feeling grateful this year and are planning to participate in #GivingTuesday, consider a gift to Path Forward. You can make your tax deductible donation on our Crowdrise page. Your gift supports our efforts to empower women and men to restart their careers after caregiving.
